In 1958 Hank Ballard and the Midnighters recorded a "B" side to their 45 RPM disc "Teardrops on Your Letter". While touring, the group would perform a dance that went along with the song. The dance started to catch on.
In 1960 Dick Clark, then host of a popular dance show in Philadelphia, suggested to his protege Ernest Evans that he do a cover version of the song. He also suggested a name change.
The rest, as is often said, is history. Chubby Checker's recording of "The Twist" became the biggest charting single of all time, surpassing Bing Crosby's "White Christmas"... and Checker's expert exertions changed the way world danced.
